Today, I have a challenge for you from Shaklee. Who's Shaklee? I wasn't sure either when I first heard about this opportunity. It turns out, Shaklee is the number one company in the U.S. for natural nutrition, and they were the first company in the world to obtain a Carbon Neutral (TM) certification and totally offset their CO2 emissions. Another part of Shaklee's commitment to healthier living is their line of household cleaning products. They challenged several bloggers to look under their kitchen sink, and I was shocked at what I found. Take a minute to read this review and watch a video. You may be surprised what is lurking beneath your kitchen sink!
Shaklee asked us to take a picture of the area underneath our kitchen sink. As you can see, I have some of the usual household cleaners - glass cleaner, fabric freshener, all purpose cleaner, dish soap, sanitizing wipes, dish washer detergent, etc. I also checked under my bathroom sinks and found things like scouring powder and liquid toilet, tub and tile cleaners. The next part of the challenge was to look at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services "Household Products Database" and see what it had to say about the ingredients in our common household cleaners.
I was shocked to find that several of my household cleaners contained one or more of the following: kerosene, phenols, cresol, lye, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, sulfuric acid, petroleum distillates, ammonia, sodium hydroxide, butyl cellosolve, phosphoric acid, formaldehyde, chlorine bleach, morpholine, or phthalates. These chemicals have been linked to serious childhood conditions like asthma and allergies that are becoming more and more common among today's youth. In fact, there are a lot of families with no history of pulmonary issues in their genetics that suddenly have kids who are getting asthma. Check out these two videos of a mom describing her child's first asthma attack and how it inspired her to research what was under her sink.
Get Clean With Shaklee Products
Shaklee was kind enough to send me their Get Clean Starter Kit (a $115 value), and I have to say, I have really enjoyed using them. Their dishwasher concentrate works better than any powdered detergent I have ever tried. I just followed the instructions for hard water usage, and the dishes came out squeaky clean with no residue. Their laundry concentrate (HE compatible) is just as effective at stain removal as our favorite brands. It took out a nasty salsa stain in one of our favorite outfits for my daughter when used as a pre-soak, and it left all of our grown up clothes fresh and clean as well. I could go on and on about each individual product, but I don't want to keep you all day. I will say that each product performed just as well as what I was previously using, and a few products - the dish washer concentrate and the Basic H2 used as a degreaser - performed better than what I was previously using in my home. The degreaser did a fantastic job on my microwave and stove top.
My only initial concern was the cost of the kit - $99 for members/$115 for non-members - but when I compared the cost of what I would have to pay to get the cleaning power of this kit in individual bottles (nearly $3400) it was a no-brainer. This kit presents a great value.
I also love the idea of using a concentrate instead of purchasing each individual cleaning product. When you purchase a Get Clean Starter Kit from Shaklee, you can buy with a clear conscience. For each kit purchased, you keep 108 pounds of packaging waste out of landfills and eliminate 248 pounds of greenhouse gas when compared to ready-to-use cleaners. That's the kind of company I can be happy to purchase from. Plus, you know that all of the Shaklee cleaning products are safe for your family and have never been tested on animals. If you have a child with early symptoms of asthma, this kit is a must.
